Intelligent Questions!

Situation: I am at home. I am in my shorts and have a towel on my shoulder and near the bathroom. Where could I possibly going? I have visitors at home - my roommate and a lady friend of his.

Intelligent question (roomy): Are you going for a bath?
Answer: Yes I am. If you guys had plans for the same you can join me.

Shock!

I miss Bhaji Rao, he was one year junior to me at IIT. He was a late nine pointer (that’s like getting a perfect 10 in gymnastics). Remarkably his intelligence was not confined to academics only, as V2 and myself often found after been haunted by intelligent questions by him. I wish I wrote blogs at that time, one of our many books would have been "1001 intelligent questions".

The typical reaction to an "intelligent" question is best answered by another "intelligent" question and the fun is two fold when the subject dismisses your question as moronic. But, such occurrences of wit are rare and most of the time I used the shock and awe campaign.

Situation: I am going down the stairs.
Intelligent Question: Neeche jaa raha hai kya?
Intelligent Answers: Doesn’t this way go upstairs?

Bhaji Rao, was stud in life, music, academics and a fitness freak. He also was very fast in adapting to our intelligent answers in good humor, to the point that some questions like the one below seemed to be preplanned.

Situation: Scooter tier puncher - had asked for his cycle the previous night. On, seeing me riding it and the next day and passing him by on his cycle ...

Intelligent question: Puncher theek kara liya kya ? (with a mischievous smile)

Towards the mid of our association in IIT, Bhaji took the precaution of informing beforehand that he was going to ask an intelligent question before any question(as a matter of self defense). And towards the end of our intellectual association, the true stud could outsmart us by making it difficult for us to realize if it was indeed a "preplanned" or a "genuine" intelligent questions.

We had attributed Bhaji Rao's new found intelligence to our conditioning - at least we should have something to cheer our confused self’s with. I miss those intelligence question now, not because they are not asked but seem a bit irritate able and ignored.

Small Wonder

Today’s realization: People having nothing really substantial to do, make small things as big issues. This is not the "Eureka" types of observations, as I can safely say we all would have felt it sometime or the other. I am just trying to make a mutually exclusive statement. Again, my observations about what is small or big is subject to my fancy. It is important to back your beliefs in this regard as I have to trust myself on this or else I would be prioritizing issues on the skewed notion of others. A mistake which we eventually make some point or the other.

The trivial matters in life which can be solved with the easiest of ease become big issues. In fact, they even have a quality control on it to make it look important. Speaking of quality control - a wonderful concept that evolved if people in the first place didn’t make small issues a big thing. True, small things make the ocean - but why complicate small things when they can be kept simple and the main issue in had is the big problem?

In most case like in work, we all want to feel important about what we do and end up attaching undue relevance to small tasks. The easier and the peaceful thing is to accept the triviality of the whole issue instead of making the sky fall on all concerned.

Knowing me - knowing you

For you kind friends who have visited my blog’s so far and tried to read my previous post “Animal Instinct”, I would not blame you for any sort of opinion you would have formed about me. The point is those who know me, love me (or so I think). So, needless to say it’s been hard finding love - at least lasting or consistent ;-). I have attributed this occurrence to my ever “evolving” nature. Freud and his ways of rationalizing have been of much utility and practicality to me in the short run.

I had some very critical reviews about the previous post with V2 and Pankaya. It was somewhat critically acclaimed by V2, may be it has got to do with he knowing me.

For the record, a lady recently told me she doesn’t think “Pankaya” is a cute name much to my disappointment, as I have always thought that I had a way of been and doing things which are exclaimed to be cute with the fairer sex. It may come across a case of not knowing oneself. The un-cutely nomenclatured guy form Cambridge, was very critical of my trivial observations. Though, as with most of our conversations none of us laid down our guard until we digressed into some implicit mutual admiration to settle the matter. I always think of Pankya following the footsteps of Prof. Hawkins et-al.

Speaking of him and his absorbing theory of black holes which he recently and humbly dropped after three decades, left me wondering in humor about our acceptance of any theory or belief especially if it is proposed by someone “acceptable” to us and catches our fancy. But as with all theories of science, they are self correcting with time. There are things we may know and things we may not (at least in the near future). I feel it’s important to concentrate on things which we can know and my interest in knowing the fate of the human society and further of the Homo-sapiens is very much called for because

1. It’s possible that we can form a theory of human behavior through sociobiology as we may very soon possess the needs to do so. I am not sure about the same for the theory of black holes.
2. We are a society heading towards - well nowhere (I somehow don’t agree with and trust G.W. Bush’s idea on this issue). We are responsible for all this cause it is our disjoint thinking, that has lead us to this state and to say that its too difficult to think about the above mentioned scientifically is giving up on what ever we believe in (Sorry, but its about humans evolution than the American values, Mr. Bush). If it’s possible is another issue, but not trying is defeatist. Since man has taken upon playing “God”, we should not let the task be unfulfilled.
3. In trying to understand more about this I would be able to understand the world around me better, to use it for short term advantage. :)

Knowing is important but knowing what to know based on what can be known and of immediate importance is imperative.

Animal Instinct

Nafisa Joseph, may she rest in peace. I liked the chick. It's a great tragedy for the human animal that life or so I should say modern day “civilized living” brings us to the brink of killing ourselves or hurting oneself through some seemingly harmless (“stress busting” or at times socially necessary activities) like smoking, bungee jumping or driving fast to reach in time, which is contrary to the basic animal instinct of each animal - Survival.

1. What has made us loose our animal instinct, so much so that to the uninitiated, it is a derogatory term?

I have always been intrigued by the fact as to why are we humans unhappy or in case many others who would confess to be reasonably "happy". When I see other animals, not in captivity but in the jungle (natural ecosystem) I always wonder if they know what is it like been unhappy or happy? Every person develops his own impressions from such experience and for the rest of us we rely on other persons experience and judgment (partially or completely) to form an opinion. But, I think those who have had such an opportunity more than I have had, would second me in saying that there are no emotions like been happy, sad or bored in animals. As, for the animals in captivity and unnatural conditions, the story may be quite different. So, it can be inferred that what we have created in the form “modern society” and civilization in an unnatural condition for our species.

2. The question that then arises is that how the hell did we reach to the point where we have created an environment which is against our natural instincts (or has propelled the majority of mankind into deplorable living conditions)?

Before I dwell into that I must first address another question. What is animal instinct?
The instinct to survive - which includes looking for food, finding shelter and procreation. This is something which we are born with, which becomes active with our response to the surroundings/environment. Now, each species has its own reaction to environment and is governed by genetics. This is where a gentleman named Mr. Darwin and his theory comes into place. Simply speaking we are the creatures evolved by the process of natural selection and survival of the fittest. For all species it is the nature which enforces evolution onto the species. So, it may be because we have evolved into a species which felt it was necessary to change the environment to suit our needs rather than evolving further.

3. But, if that is so then how did we become “intelligent” enough to change our environment?

This is where Darwin’s theory is not able to cover up. The church would have us believe that we are the supreme creation of God. The Marxist believe it’s the social classes and the Freudians refer it to the Oedipal drama with in the family. I am not aware of the views of the Vedas on this issue. Above three explanations are not fundamental as they do not explain or question the existence of society and social behavior irrespective of how primitive it is. Recently, I stumbled upon the theory of Consilience, by E.O Wilson which proposes to explain this from the fundamental Darwinian standpoint, by attributing this to genetics. We are a negative at birth and can only be best up to a complete positive of it depending how “exposed” we are. The question here is again do all species have this ability of intelligence (which gets activated at a certain time in the evolution cycle) or these genes were specifically formed in us. The answers to this can create various scenarios, but as of now it is the humans who have to ability to change the environment because of their intelligence.

There are many critics of this theory and term it racial as it states that all our abilities (talents) are determined by genes and that free will is an illusion and they label it on the lines Nazi ideology. If it is indeed proven to be a fact then it has to accepted, since it offers a plausible explanation. Further, is not correct to assume that the stronger of a species will go about to killing or oppressing a weaker of the species because the concept of this society (as we know it to be hierarchal) is a part of the evolution process. This is very much different from the concept of the “artificial society” which is professed by the Marxist, the Capitalists or any man made concept of society as this society is in itself a figment of human imagination or so to say “freewill”. I think of Hitler as a believer in the evolution philosophy, but his actions to terminate the “weaker” population was caused by social reasons in a man made unnatural society and not by evolutionary needs.

4. Is man is a social animal?

What I am assuming here is that humans during some stage of their evolution became a social animal (as many other primates). But, that during the course of times our societies became more “advanced” propelled by our “intelligence” to use the environment for our benefit. Our “intelligence” was also the process of our evolution. So, in turn our societies are evolved. One thing that strikes me is that the intelligence propelled change in the environment (deforestation?) or the social structure is much faster than the natural process. This may be seen as conflict between the animal instincts of humans and the acquired social behavior. It is however ironic to note that primitive social behavior may have existed for satisfying these instincts. In order to better understand this, a study of present society is called for, which I shall leave for later times.

We have tried various kinds of social structures over the ages and still nothing seems to work. There are many different theories about social structure and predominantly governed by the respective religious beliefs. I have the following questions, which I hope to address in the future.

Are we in a transition phase of our evolution? (Will it ever end?)
OR
Are we at the end of our species and/or the planet? (Is it our destiny to eventually collapse and there is no point fighting it)

If we survive ....
All the differences regarding the social structure have to subside, when humans form what may be called as collective intelligence. It would the mean the survival of the fittest “intelligent” gene(s) and the creation of the utopian world. Will the human genome project and IT revolution have a role to play in it and to what extent? May be every war, every tragedy will take us back to our Animal Instinct again.

And this is how it all started ....

One fine uneventful (typical) afternoon in office, I was doing what has been over the years been one of the most cherished activities for me ever since my second week as a freshman at IIT Bombay. I was talking to my friend V2, but the fact that most of our conversations have been on chat for the last one year it has given us an opportunity to record our realizations. Only if we had done so in our college days, we would have published our book by now. So this is what started it all ...

vittu007 : kher baba is antaryami...
unchristened : ya ..
unchristened : anyways .. mem soch raha houn ki el blog bana loo .. so tat i can write all the stuff tat comes in my head these days
vittu007 : well that is a good idea..
vittu007 : agar baad main book likhni ho to help bhee ho jayegi
vittu007 : otherwise we keep losing the ideas
unchristened : yes .. see i figured out one thing
unchristened : exactly
unchristened : there 2 types of ppl / conversations
unchristened : ppl of ideas and ppl who gossip .. well me mostly have ideas .. we gossip cause its unavoidale at time
vittu007 : dude
vittu007 : i just came to same conclusion though a little variation

We have reached a point that at times there is little to discuss as we have become alike over the times.

So, this space will be about a person who has ideas and most of the times that’s all I have got. Though, gossiping is becoming unavoidable because:

1. I have to do it to deal with people who gossip ( 99 % of the population)
2. It is nice to take a break from thinking :)

I hope, that I can have a good combination of the two and can reflect on my life better.
